I follow the method of G. Polya in his classic work "How to Solve It". By asking the right questions, one can help the student define his problem, form a plan for the solution, carry out the plan, and examine the result. I also try to work as many difficult problems from the student's text as time permits, in order to show that all problems have a solution, and the student can build confidence in attacking any problem. I try to present the material in as many ways as needed, so that I can match the subject to the student's style of learning.

What strikes me most as I look back at my education is how much of an impact a teacher can have when they make their subject relevant to their students.
