A Little Bit About Me...

I started as an Adjunct Instructor at ISU for the Geomatics Engineering program for the 2007-2008 school year. Prepare for class setup the curriculum, homework, grading and test for 10-12 students. I went to ITT Technical Institute following that and was offered to Chair School of Drafting & Design. I taught and ran the department for 2 years. I was in charge of 4-10 teachers and 170+ students.
I believe in identifying the learning style of the student which can take some time with some. Are they a visual learner I draw pictures, maps, charts and video; if an audio learner tapes, lecture, youtube, video, etc,.. and if a kinesthetic learner then they need the hands on experience to develop the learning that is needed, so then standing back to guide the thought process without doing it for them.

I have been translating complicated ideas into a language/format that others can understand since kindergarten. I have always enjoyed the process. As a college student at Carnegie Mellon University, I started working at Sylvan Learning Center as a math tutor specializing in Algebra and Calculus. I also found quite a bit of success working with behavior problem students in middle school and higher math. Over the years, I have both returned to Sylvan periodically as well as did private tutoring when opportunities presented themselves. I love education and the process of learning. Access to education is critical for every person to be able to pursue their dreams as they see fit.
I am a concrete random learner who was successful in an abstract linear system. The way my brain processes information give me a unique viewpoint that can find a way to help others learn and grow. Conf ... read more

As a graduate student in mechanical engineering, I have much experience in the math and science fields including experimental methods. I have written many technical conference papers as well as presented them to researchers around the country. These experiences have come in quite useful during the last year when I have tutored SAT and ACT prep courses in math and science, as well as math courses up to advanced high school level. I have also done a small amount of tutoring in other subjects such as english and history.
Most of my tutoring experience has been working with 9-12th graders, which I have found to enjoy because the relationship between student and tutor is closer to a peer-peer relationship. My style of teaching includes mostly example problems and breaking down these problems into basic parts. I like to find example problems that are challenging to the student, but not t ... read more

The past ten years for me have been spent teaching English and theology in a third-world setting in Africa, Nigeria to be specific. I have been responsible for organizing and overseeing the curriculum as well as classroom teaching since 1998. I was also a teacher at a Community College in Dallas, TX for a year. During my undergraduate degree, I was involved in tutoring English and math for students who were struggling. I feel that my academic knowledge as well as the practical experience I have gained over the years qualify me to help tutor students in English and math.
I am a strong believer in the Socratic style of teaching which, as you know, helps students themselves to think through issues and problems and discover the answer as we move along. I have always enjoyed leading students to that 'eureka' moment where they have grasped a difficult idea or concept, put it in thei ... read more

I like working with children and young people very much. I believe that teaching should always be student-centered. It is my goal to find what helps a person to learn and really work with that student's natural talent and personality. I am very patient and persistent. If necessary, I think it is okay to repeat information until the student is comfortable and confident that they have learned it. I am a good communicator, and I appreciate feedback from others as well. I am always willing to adjust my style to accommodate a student's learning style.
I was formerly a high school English Teacher and an ESL teacher. I taught one year overseas teaching English as a second language. For two years, I was an education supervisor at the Hawaii Job Corps, and it was my job to ensure that the students' academic needs were being met. I excelled at that job, but had to leave as I moved b ... read more

Just telling a child how to do a problem is not effective. I believe a teacher needs to explain the logic and reasoning behind solving certain problems certain ways. Knowing this can help the child discover what works specifically to him/her. If a child learns to reason for his/her self, they gain the ability to be lifetime learners. My hope is, that instead of dreading school they gain confidence in their abilities to figure things out, and therefore find joy in learning. Above all it is important to listen to the kids, stay positive, and never show frustration.
Over the past year I have tutored through The College of Idaho's Chemistry Club. Chemistry, especially the math portions, never came easily to me. I had to work hard and spend hours asking professors questions, but now I am much better at chemistry because of it. As a tutor I wanted to help fellow students who were struggl ... read more

Working in a small school, I was lucky enough to learn that developing a positive relationship with your students makes all the difference! I believe all students have potential. As a teacher it is my job to motivate, model, instruct, observe, and praise for attempts in order for all of my students to find academic success. I hope that I can instill a love of learning in every child I teach. My style of teaching could be described as creative instructional strategies, a willingness to modify on-the-fly to reach objectives, organized, fun and challenging. In general I am a happy, outgoing person who enjoys life and extends this gregarious nature to everyone.

Working with such a diverse population of students ranging from grades 3-12, I have learned that each child processes information in different ways. Assisting them in overcoming their learning disability has taught me to understand and identify their struggles and how they can work through them. I teach positive social and communication skills through small group discussions and lecture based presentations. Much of my teaching experience is rooted in one-on-one and small group interaction. I believe that every child has the right to an equal education and that every support service that is available should be provided. I truly enjoy the challenge of motivating a student through difficulties they may encounter in academics. I have the ability to relate quickly with students which helps develop a trust that will result in progress for the student.

A Little Bit About Me...

Having taught small and large classes, as well as one-on-one, I am a firm believer in the benefit that one-on-one and small group instruction can offer for students. As a teacher, I love being able to identify and capitalize on students' interests and strengths. I believe that all students can learn, and fully embrace and utilize the concepts of learning styles and multiple intelligences to help all students find success, regardless of the area of study.
I have been involved in offering educational services since I was in high school, when I tutored younger students in math, Spanish, research writing, and general elementary subjects. A career in education was a natural choice, and I have taught both ESL and Spanish, with experience in elementary and secondary teaching, as well as teaching online.

None of my family had gone to college, so it was predicted I would not either. I had a hunger to learn, so I systematically worked full-time and studied part-time, earning eight major degrees in cities where they alowed residency rquirements to be met in such a way. I was young and energetic, so it was a lot of work, but a joy. It took about 15 years to finally earn my doctorate. Along the way, I earned certification in a half dozen fields (especially loved English, social stuides, and psychology). I was employed for decades in education, teaching full-time for five years, often teaching on the side when I was counselor or administrator. Except for my earliest years of employment (where I was often employed full-time in radio or newspaper), I often tutored along the way. I have been able to tutor part-time a good many years since I often come across young people (and adults) who ... read more

When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset. It was my job to teach John how to count money. After trying a variety of methods, we eventually found that learning in traditional environments was too stressful for John. So, we played Monopoly. People had been trying to teach him to count money for months, maybe years. Three weeks after I started with him, I took him to Walmart with a ha ... read more
