A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is "Me, We, You". I will show the student how to work through the problem/concept, then we will do it together, then I will oversee and make corrections on the student's attempt to do it his/herself. Math can be fun and interesting if you have the right tools!

I enjoy using a variety of techniques with my students. We play games, use various software programs, and other helpful one on one devices to assist students in understanding and remembering concepts.
I have served as a guidance counselor in middle schools for almost forty years and retired in December, 2013. During the last twelve years, I have tutored students in math in groups and individually. Elementary Reading is one of my top subjects! I have completed graduate level classes in advanced reading techniques. I am currently working part time in an elementary school with children needing extra help with their reading.

I have worked with children experiencing reading difficulties for many years and have specialized training in multiple advanced reading techniques. I have tutored in a center for children with dyslexia and am currently working part time in an elementary school with first and second graders struggling with reading. I am dyslexic myself, but was not diagnosed until college. I remember too well the shame and frustration of not being able to read. Dyslexia does not go away, but I have learned many ways to work around it. I work to make children understand that their reading problems are not their fault, and that together we can overcome the barriers in their way.
We work hard in my sessions but we also laugh a lot. I provide plenty of praise and positive reinforcement and celebrate even the smallest improvement.

A Little Bit About Me...

My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

I like to make teaching fun! If a student is bored they aren't going to be putting 100% into their work. I also use a positive reward system and celebrate all achievement. Even if it is minor.

Education is essential for the mind to grow.

On the whole, I look for a rather creative approach when it comes to learning and studying. I ask that students be skeptical in all they hear and read, so asking questions as a form of studying will be essential. Just reading a book or looking at flash cards for studying purposes can prove to be tedious and ineffective. And putting what's learned in context is always necessary if the subject calls for any everyday application.
I have helped people with their English-speaking skills off and on and am very skilled in spelling and grammar. I've been learning Japanese for going on three years, as well. I'm aware that it's not a particularly high in-demand language to learn, but I am more than willing to aid in learning it if it is desired. Also, having graduated high school, I have enough knowledge to teach kids about the basics of science, math, and English.
