Children learn in different way, and have different levels of enthusiasm for different subjects. I think that the way to encourage a child's success is to identify the ways in which the students learns best, and to understand what subjects/topics interest them. If you can relate to a child, your ability to motivate them and encourage them is amplified. I like to challenge students and to encourage them to think on their own. I believe positive reinforcement is important to children whose self-esteem might be low due to perceived lack of academic ability.

My primary experience in my over twelve years of teaching has been teaching students with special needs, working mostly with younger students with difficulties with reading and writing, or math. When I taught in Virginia my position was split between two K-2 schools, and I became very interested in working with that age group and its particular needs. Because of my background in special education, I am very familiar determining what educational needs students have based on assessments and observations in order to make interventions as effective as possible. A Little Bit About Me...

My passion is the arts. I have explored a variety of areas including fibers, painting, drawing, 3-D, mixed media, collage, clay, graphic design, etc. Skills from all academic areas are used in the arts from math to history. An arts educaiton has been proven to increase learning in these areas and raise test scores. I was a K-8 art public education teacher for three years. For the past three years, I have worked with special needs children in a private school. Other areas of interest include psychology, English, and history.
