As a science educator I strive to have students build their own knowledge with my guidance. While gaining BA in biology from a nationally ranking liberal arts college, I further expanded my knowledge by receiving a SURF/SILO Grant to conduct independent breast cancer research, working for a brain tumor research laboratory, and pursuing drug development as an independent contractor for a pharmaceutical company. As a college student, I also acted as a teaching assistant for zoology and comparative vertebrate anatomy laboratories for three years. I have educated both college and middle school students, and through these experiences I learned that the key to effectively teaching others is patience. I guide my students but do not do the work for them. Most students have the ability to learn the material being instructed to them. By being patient, I give the students the opportunity to problem solve on their own, which ultimately builds confidence. With more confidence, students seem to learn better. I believe this is the key to mastering any academic subject.
