I believe that being an effective tutor involves tailoring my style to the way the student learns. That is why I pay close attention to what seems effective for each student. I begin by allowing them to ask questions, then answer the questions as directly as possible, and from there I adapt to what seems to work for each student. I like teaching and tutoring math. The subject is more accessible than most students believe, and helping someone break through that barrier is very satisfying. I believe that practice and consistent work is the way to learn this subject, and I consistently encourage my students to take this to heart. In 2009, I was a professional tutor(as opposed to a peer-tutor) for the Biology Department of Ulster County Community College, NY, for students struggling with: Bio 100 for non-science majors, Bio 101—an intro course for those planning to continue but lacking a strong background, Bio 105—General Bio required by all biology-related programs, and Bio 109—Human Bio for non-science majors. I noted that if students needed Biology assistance, they often needed Chemistry assistance also, so the basics of that had to be included in order for topics like macromolecules and cellular respiration to make any true sense at all. When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment.
