A Little Bit About Me...

I am an award-winning journalist and editor with 10 years of experience. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in journalism. I also concentrated on English, political science and history while in school. While in college, I was the teaching assistant for advanced reporting and advanced editing, two capstone classes for a bachelor's degree. In those positions, I mentored students one-on-one, and I helped them improve their writing and editing skills. Since graduation, I have volunteered as a teacher for religious school, and I also freelance as an editor for several professional publications. I earned a 31 on the ACT and a 780 on SAT II: Writing.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught either French or English, either in the classroom or as a private tutor, since 1989, when I was recruited as an undergraduate to teach Elementary French. For the next 5 years I taught all levels of French grammar and PhD readings, as well as first and second semester English Grammar and Composition courses while pursuing my MFA in Literary Translation (French and Spanish). I’m passionate about both French and English and have a strong desire to bring a love of and competence in both subjects to my students. My teaching, even in the classroom, is focused as much as possible on the individual student. My teaching style is one of discipline and at the same time hands-on. Students must feel the relevance of the world around them in order to gain an understanding of what's being taught. I work with the individual but never let the focus off of the competition that's waiting. Students must understand that learning is an every day, every moment experience. It's all about how they see the world around them. I love teaching and working with children. The "aha" moment is what I live for. I believe that EVERY student can achieve what they set their mind to with guidance and persistence.

A Little Bit About Me...

The primary obligation of a tutor is to show the pupil that big, intimidating chunks of academic work, whether they be assignments, units, or even entire classes, can be broken down into logical sequences of more manageable parts. To accomplish that, I focus first on my demeanor. When struggling in school, it is easy to panic, and if the tutor is relaxed, calm, and deliberate, then that catches on and the session can proceed in a level-headed manner. Also, I make sure that the sessions are reliably structured. We look first at the syllabus, then at the assignment at hand, and articulate what exactly needs to be accomplished. After that, we lay out a road map and proceed in a step-by-step fashion until the work is done.
