A Little Bit About Me...

I began working as a Water Safety Instructor when I was 16 and taught swimming to people age 3 to age 76. I worked as a Teacher's Assistant at West Virginia university and taught my own section of a one credit course required of all freshmen students while working on a BA in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. While working on my MA in English Literature with a Certificate in Folklore at George Mason university, I worked as a substitute teacher and then was hired as a full time middle school English teacher. I have a passion for working individually with students to find their personal learning styles so that they can succeed and excel academically. I have enjoyed each experience I have had with teaching, beginning with an informal position as a study group leader in the Genetics course I completed at Penn State University. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. As the coordinator of the Conservation Science Internship Program at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, I am responsible for much of the training of 5-11 interns at one time. The Sanctuary hosts interns from all over the world including 26 interns (age range: 17-42) from 24 countries in my time as coordinator.
