My comments on tutoring Chess : I was taught as an adolescent.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught physical science and life science in New York public high schools since 1996. I have taught at Brooklyn Tech and Midwood H.S., two of the leading high schools for physical science in the state. Many of my students have been accepted into leading colleges and universities across the country. I have received excellent training and evaluations from my supervisors, who have taught me to use non-traditional as well as traditional methods of instruction and assessment, such as collaborative learning and portfolio assessment. In order to help finance my graduate education, I have tutored students in N.Y.C. from a very wide range of ethnic and ability levels privately for more than ten years in writing, science, English, and history.

A Little Bit About Me...

My style is akin to the Socratic Method, while I adapt myself to the needs of my students, maintaining a balance between discussion and lecture. I avail myself of technologies, to be used or not depending on the situation. My students are expected to read and discuss their understanding of the sources. They are expected to write as well, learning the skills needed in the classroom and workplace. Writing also allows them to better understand areas of interest to them. Most of my students to well. I have been told by many that they came to understand my willingness to work with them, as long as they are willing to so do for themselves. I make demands of my students, and they respond.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that assessment of a child's skills should drive the teacher's instruction. Every child should receive instruction that meets their individual needs. I believe that I inspire children to want to learn more and to explore freely. I demonstrate an enthusiasm towards teaching that my students respond to, and produces eager learners.
I have been a kindergarten teacher for the last eight years. I differentiate my instruction to meet the needs of all children. As a result, my students conclude their kindergarten experience with reading and math skills at or above grade level expectations. Also, I focus on learning activities that foster the child's character and conflict resolution skills. Children demonstrate appropriate behaviors and coping skills amongst their peers. I also believe that fostering a child's fine and gross motor skills is of the utmost importance. I u ... read more

I dealt directly with children and families from disenfranchised populations, demographically diverse populations, and special needs populations. What I value most is having the opportunity to work with adults and children simultaneously. This gave me a broad over-standing of how to approach very challenging situations. In addition, what I have found to be an effective tool when working with academically challenged youth is having patience, and showing unconditional positive self-regaurd.
My resume highlights my ability, knowledge, and expertise in individual and group therapy at a master level in the field of social work. During my time at Eastern Michigan University, I was able to advance my skill set and knowledge-base by being in a supervisory role. I build a relationship of trust with the students and offer positive reinforcement and use humor to engage all of them. My initial goal is to engage the students then move on to teaching with the final goal being the understanding of the subject in a way that is deeper then just memorization. I want the students to understand why cats see well in the dark instead of just knowing that they do. My specialty is English Literature but I enjoy teaching science and math.
I have privately tutored students that recently arrived from Japan in English with a focus on conversation to enable them to quickly feel comfortable in a new country. As they attained conversation skills I changed my focus to education based teaching with a focus on understanding the classroom teacher and being able to participate in the classroom discussion. A Little Bit About Me...

I am used to teaching both students close to my age and students younger than I. I always try to explain ideas in ways that make the student think. I never like to hand answers to students, so I do my best at having students learn in their own way with someone helping them along. Being a virtuoso, I believe practice makes perfect in every subject. The way to best understand something new is to review it and practice it. I have a substantial amount of patience when it comes to teaching. I am also a very generous, kind, and humorous person who has learned to live life to its fullest. I work hard at making friends with everyone I meet everywhere, and I believe your best friend can also be your greatest influence in learning.

I love helping and working with learners of all ages. I believe that everyone has something to learn and that it is a continuous process. I am patient, goal-driven, and understanding. My goal is to help you master the concepts. I want you to be able to discover a concept or big idea for yourself and then expand on that so you can explain it to me multiple ways. I believe that all students and children can reach their potential with proper encouragement in an inspiring environment. I will improve you and your student's understanding of the material.

As a recent college graduate, the stress, confusion, and (ultimately) joy involved in the attempt to master new subjects are fresh in my memory. While nothing can replace experience, I believe that being young provides me with an edge over those older than me when it comes to connecting with students. I have tutored a wide range of students, ranging from an at-risk 5th grader to high school algebra students, to college sophomores. While the subject matter and level of sophistication certainly varies between students, the approach is generally the same. By maintaining a professional and caring attitude with my students, and giving them that little push when they need it, anyone is able to succeed academically.
I think the best way to teach is to show students how they can break down problems and find answers to questions that may, at first glance, seem overwhelming. I have yet ... read more
