I have been teaching in the area of communication disorders for 19 years. Many students are slow and labored readers, due to the fact that they do not "hear" and process sounds or phonics as well as others. I recently learned that dyslexia has many of the same characteristics as those seen in students who are hard-of-hearing, so I attended a workshop to learn the Wilson method of teaching students who are dyslexic. I ascribe to Gardner's 8 Stages of Intelligence theory, which purports the belief that every student is gifted, intelligent and capable of learning in a manner that conducive to their own unique style. As a teacher, I use myself as a tool to help facilitate the learning process. I have a social work background which, in my work has always been integrated with some component of teaching, both in and out of the classroom. I can teach most K-12 subjects, college prep courses and provide tutoring services including assessment and curriculum development.
