I believe in an interactive learning environment where I am constantly asking students for their inputs and working through problems with them. This way, they become confident in their abilities to solve difficult problems and provoke critical thinking. I am currently a graduate student in petroleum engineering. As an undergrad I worked as a mentor for a freshman in my major, helping him cope with school and advising him of the courses he needs to take. I also provide tutoring when needed. In high school I was part of a program called PEPP where high school students provided tutoring to middle school students. I was also involved in a program developed by my school's Honor Society where we tutor our peers in math and science courses. I have taken statistics and gotten an A in the course and still have all course materials to give a general overview of statistics and how to use SPSS. I am knowledgeable on the software and would be able to answer questions on statistics because of how well I did and how I used to help others who struggled with the class. My teaching style is to have a set of problems made up for the students to observe as examples to help understand certain chapters. It appears that for the sake of the school’s overall achievement level on state tests, students that require critical and extensive attention are being ignored for lack of time. Because it is assumed that these students will not pass the test regardless of the amount of effort invested in them, very little is invested in them and they are left far behind.
