I am a friendly and easy to talk to person. I strive to make my tutoring and mentoring sessions into conversations rather than a one-way lecture. When tutoring or mentoring, I usually let the student lead the session so that I can assess where his or her strengths and weaknesses lie. I like to let them take the initiative because it actively engages them in the learning process versus passively listening to me. I also like to break down concepts to the basics and share my own tips on how to remember and understand these concepts. I love watching and learning from children. I believe that learning is closely related to confidence. I like to take the time to get to know children and understand what they like so that I can better understand how their brain works and how they process information. In understanding what they like, this gives me the ability to let them show me something new. The best way that I retained information in college was to teach someone else what I was studying. My early teaching and learning style was to do as many problems that were thrown at me in class or the text. I learned quickly that you need to understand the problem in order to solve problems that aren't set up for you. I love using different styles of teaching to see which way each individual learns best. I believe all students are capable of learning the same curriculum, but may need to be shown or approached in different ways.
