I tailor my teaching style to the student. I first evaluate where the student is by building rapport, discussing the problem he/she is having, talking to the teacher, and talking to the parents. I then begin focusing on the area where the student is having difficulties. It may be that the student requires help with homework as well as review of fundamentals. I address both areas, always encouraging the student.

The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.
For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. I talk mathematics from a tutor's point of view and expect the student to fill in the blanks in a way such that I've set him/her up. What it does is keep the student's attention since they've to answer my questions and "fill in my blanks". A Little Bit About Me...

Although difficulty with math is a common with todays students I am convinced it is largely due to a lack of confidence. In addition to aiding a students learning process I believe it is important to be a coach as well, encouraging the student to believe in the potential that lies within most all students. I have found most students can and do perform better as they start believing in themselves. I believe in giving the students study hints and tools for preparing for exams. One common issue is math anxiety. I have found ways to help students overcome much of the fear they face in taking a math exam.
