My comments on tutoring Science : I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade. I am certified K-6th grade. I also taught advanced and Intermediate math and language arts in a GED/HiSet program. I currently teach ESOL/CIVICS for an Adult School.

My teaching philosophy starts out with essentialism which believes in a strong core curriculum and high academic standards. I believe it is important to have a strong foundation on which to build upon. After ensuring a strong foundation I tend to lean more towards progressivism. I believe students should be taught what is relevant today while becoming more independent learners, by utilizing problem solving skills and critical thinking. The second time through, we approach the problem with a little more weight placed on the student. I have tutored informally throughout high school and college, both my fellow peers and lower income students. I was part of an ESL mentoring high school program during my time in New York. During my time at college, I created a mentoring committee for underclassman that focused on business related items and school curriculum. As I spent most of my time in groups studying, I learned that I was very good at explaining principles and material, regardless of subject matter.

I love to help children understand a subject better. It is a great feeling to see a student get the idea after being helped. I believe that every student is capable of learning; it all depends on their learning style. In my masters program and while I have been teaching, I have learned many ways to get students engaged in the material they are learning. Some students learn better with one on one and some do better with group work. You just have to try different approaches until you see which one works best. I find that the best way to tutor my students is to find out what they are struggling with the most in a subject and then helping them with the basics in that subject. I work with the student on the basics and then build up to more difficult material. I am patient with students of all ages. I believe that knowing the basics of a subject is always important. In college, I always had to know the basics to build on that knowledge. It can take some time to start at the bottom, but it's worth having the permanent knowledge over learning it short term just to pass the test.

Try to customize to students intrest in order to keeep attention and make as entertaining as possible. Every child sees things from different eyes. I just teach them how to look.
