A Little Bit About Me...

I have my degree in Elementary Education. I have had experience teaching large class sizes, but I have also spent a lot of time in small group reading instruction, and I have worked in small group math. I tutored a kindergarten girl to improve her phonemic awareness. I tutored Language Arts in elementary school after school hours. I worked at a day care for 5 years and helped students with their homework after school.
I believe in meeting students at their level of need, and mastering the skills needed in order to move onto higher level skills. I believe in teaching students how to develop their critical thinking skills, and teaching them the concepts needed to succeed in school and life.

My comments on tutoring Microsoft Office : I have been tutoring Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access) for over 20 years and am very good at breaking down the concepts and making them easy to understand. I'll show you all the shortcuts and make your work easy, whether you prefer to work with the mouse or the more time-saving keyboard shortcuts available. And, if you need help in automation, I can show you how easy that is, too. (For example, if you do the same steps or type the same thing over and over, we can shorten that to just one keystroke or mouse click.) I can also help you with advanced programming like sending keystrokes or mouse clicks to another screen or automatically reading information that changes off of a website, like looking up a stock price and doing something with it, like inserting specific text if the price is above a certain value or inserting something different if the price is below a certain value. Or Word or Excel can automatically open every file in a directory and perform the same actions on it, like change some text, or insert a company logo, etc. In Word, I'll show you all the things you know Word can do that WordPerfect could but you can't figure out how. I'll show you all the time-saving things, like trigger abbreviations where you type sy for "Sincerely yours," or anything else you repeatedly type that you would like to blast out with a couple of keystrokes. You can even type a whole paragraph with a couple of keystrokes. I'll show you how to fit everything on one page when one line runs over onto the next page. And how to set up booklet printing. All the things that are so easy to do if the help screen were better. In Excel, I'll teach you all the time-saving shortcuts, too. And all the things people get frustrated with and can't figure out how to work around. In PowerPoint, I'll teach you how to make PROFESSIONAL LOOKING presentations that look like they came from a company. Get rid of all those words spell-check underlines in red, cluttering your presentation. And if you're flooded with email, I'll show you how Outlook can automatically respond to people with different messages for different people, pretending to be you, or Outlook can filter your mail based on who it's from or something it says in the subject or body of the email (like "Low-Priced Car Warranty"), or Outlook can play a special sound and do something special with your mail if it's from a VIP or priority person (like your boss or significant other). I can show you how to do desktop publishing and make brochures and trifolds with Publisher. And I can show you how to make simple databases to keep track of customers or inventory or things you want to be able to search quickly based on criteria (lookup customers by last name, lookup customers by ZIP code, lookup customers who spent over $1000, etc.). I work over Zoom, where we can share each other's screens in real time so we can be very clear and specific about what to do. With me, your first hour of tutoring is free (even if you don't continue) so you can see how much tutoring is going to help you. So, let's get started soon!

I am currently employed by a college in Roanoke, Virginia as a tutor of mathematics, chemistry, and computer science and tutor elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and others professionally. For the last 23 years, it has been so fulfilling working for three colleges and tutoring independently over 2,000 students of all ages in all areas of math and computer science, as well as college writing, adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and computer science and am internationally certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. I love tutoring more every year I do it.
If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LO ... read more

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe tha ... read more

I always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. After earning both undergraduate and graduate degree in education, I taught first grade in both public and Christian schools for 5 years. I attended many Professional Development courses and applied new knowledge to my classroom. I also spent close to two years as an Educational Consultant and trainer for Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company in Asia from 2006-2008. I focused on teaching teachers how to teach reading using the 5 Essential Elements of Reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension.
Even though I am not currently teaching as my profession, I am still passionate about education and would love to continue to teach/tutor in small groups or one-on-one. I am child focused and believe it is fundamental to begin with the end in mind by determining where the child is at and where he/s ... read more

Teaching through positive re-enforcement. Present concept, allow student to demonstrate understanding, and then use a step-by-step approach to find out where lack of understanding occurs. The instructor should always be as positive as possibe and try to make learning as enjoyable as possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

What works for one student may not work for the other. One-on-one instruction is a great opportunity to find out which learning-teaching style works best for the individual student. I am patient, friendly and flexible. At the same time, I am driven to see tangible progress in my work, so that, ultimately, the student achieves his or her goals. Being a teacher is not a job for me; rather, it is who I am. Teaching is my service to others.
If you looked over my resume, you would see that I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, a year of experience as an adjunct instructor at a medical career college and two years teaching English as a Second Language at a private institution. However, if you looked over my life, you would see that I have been teaching, tutoring and mentoring my entire life. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa. If a child knows how to utilize resources such as the textbook, example problems, and the internet, then he or she will be able to work independently through a tough problem.
Education has always been extremely important to me. To me there is no greater feeling than finally grasping a difficult concept and I love helping someone ... read more

As a lifelong student and advocate of learning, I achieved a GPA of 3.75 upon returning to university classes as an older adult. I have many years of working in business, coaching and mentoring in several fields, which include accounting and business practices, such as customer service. While attending college, my happiest moments arrived with exceptional grades on research and theory papers. In the team environment, I am usually the "editor" since it comes so naturally.
When teaching, I believe in the "wow factor" so the student can really see how much fun learning can be. When they are amazed with the world of knowledge, it makes their learning and my teaching so much fun! I am here to help students set and achieve their highest goals.

Teaching position is a great way of showing that one cares for the learner and for the way everyone learns. I tutored various levels of French classes and my priority was not the money. Even now, I would often tutor French classes for free, because of my love for the language and also in order to help other French students exceed in their class. Learning French is more difficult than some people think, and teaching it is difficult as well, but I love doing it. It is a pleasure for me to help someone learn new materials and share my knowledge otherwise, if I do not, then it is not worth gaining knowledge myself.
As a native French Speaker and considering the fact French classes are offered in my University, I always loved to speak French whenever I had the opportunity to. I am currently a senior at a University and I am pursuing a bachelor degree in Criminal Justice. I have worked b ... read more

I have a very easy going way of teaching, which helps my students feel at ease and allows them to better focus on the task at hand. I believe the best teaching method is one that can apply academic principles to real life situations. This helps the student understand both the "how" and "why" of the discipline. Encouragement and patience are the qualities that a good teacher must have.
I have earned an MBA with a concentration in finance, which has given me a solid understanding of financial concepts. The underlying theme of my teaching is to excite and challenge students about the power and beauty of math and science. My approach emphasizes the aesthetics of rigor as a stepping stone to the development of new material within the context of existing knowledge, and students are encouraged to seek elegant methodologies wherever possible. I believe that successful teaching involves a careful combination of art and science, wherein technical skills are complemented by a kind and patient temperament that seeks to develop rapport with students across the spectrum of abilities. Moreover, a strong sense of personal enthusiasm should be demonstrated to students on a consistent basis for them to recognize how committed their teacher is. Respect for students as individuals must be shown at all times, even when they are poorly prepared and motivated, and teachers should set goals that will st ... read more
