More About This Tutor...

I have a somewhat relaxed teaching style that does not compromise the distinction or respect between student and teacher. This teaching style results in a classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable responding to my questions and asking for further clarification about complex topics. Many students have told me that my teaching style is refreshing and they feel comfortable in class.
With my numerous experiences in education, I think I could be a great asset in helping students become more knowledgeable. I have worked as a Tutor, Assistant Teacher, and did a short placement as an Interim Teacher. I can easily adjust to changing environments that will best suit the student’s potential. I was a Tutor in an after school program, and was an Assistant Teacher in a Special Education classroom. I finished an Interim Teaching placement in a middle school A.P. English classroom.

I am a discussion based teacher. I prefer to engage the students higher level thinking with a questioning approach. I do not think that lecture or rote memorization are proper ways to educate a child. I believe that teachers affect a students learning not just through the subject but also through the real world examples that should be the core of all learning. Students will only reach their potential when they are challenged beyond what they feel they are capable.
I am blessed to have attended a college that prepared me for real world situations and classroom circumstances. I have achieved two bachelor's degrees, a BS in bible and a BS in elementary education. I have also achieved a master's in holistic education. These degree programs provided me with a grasp of all subject areas in the elementary portion of schooling. My approach to teaching is to create a step-by-step process, providing the student with constructive feedback at each point. I understand that everyone learns differently and work to provide analogies and stories that make the topics relatable to students. My guiding principle when teaching is to be creative, enthusiastic, and organized in a way that rubs off on those that I teach. While working I strive to be patient and considerate while also being dedicated enough to get results.
In May of 2009, I graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in Communications. Throughout my time as a student, I took honors level classes and learned what it meant to go the extra mile for tests and essays. During my senior year of high school I tutored for the ACT exam and took pride in getting results. More the anything, I feel I am skilled in the preparatory and research process ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The teaching style that brings the best success I've found is centered on two points. First of all, it is based on listening, which means getting the student to talk. Eventually, with guidance, I aim to get them the ability to talk through and solve any problem. The second major technique I like to use is analogies. Even complicated subjects can be simplified into their core components which are easy to understand if taught as an analogy to something more familiar in daily life. Just as the Bible uses parables or employers use phrases from team sports to explain team roles, I find lots of success by using analogies.
My specialty is reading, writing and research. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, where I studied government, law and economics. I believe most students can learn or solve any problem by talking it through, which is often easier and mor ... read more

As a teacher with ten years of experience I have taught all ages of students K-12. Most of my experience is in ESL. I am certified Elementary K-6, ESL K-12, Social Studies, Geography, Sociology, American History, and World History all 6-12. For the Past three years I have been teaching ESL for Sevier County Schools. My assignment has given me experience at 5 schools in our district and with students at all age levels every day.
I like observing students and assessing their needs. Then finding fun and instructive materials to assist them with their learning. With ESL students it is very important to find their areas of weakness and fill in the gaps. Every student has different needs. They need to focus on these areas so they can succeed in the regular classroom.

I believe that patience and flexibility are keys to effective teaching. I practice collaborative learning, in which the student helps to shape and is an active participant in the learning process. Thus, the student's needs become the driving force in the educational approach. This approach is both creative and takes commitment on the part of both teacher and student. I truly value education, and I appreciate the opportunity to help students gain knowledge.
As both an undergraduate and graduate student, I was steeped in the process of writing: development, research, writing, and revision. During my graduate years, I worked as a research assistant and editor for one of my professors. In addition, I tutored incoming students in reading and study skills. Upon graduating, I began teaching basic and developmental writing. This experience gave me the opportunity to explain writing ... read more

I believe in inquiry based learning, or teaching any subject by incorporating the student's natural curiosity and drawing connections to their interests. I don't taking a long time to teach a student how to approach a single problem or concept and foster their understanding of the material so that they will understand how to approach the problem on their own. In other words, I put energy into explaining why they should do something so that they can reason through it themselves in a test situation.
I am currently a PhD candidate in Ecology at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
