More About This Tutor...

Having taught adults with no background in English, to 8th grade girls that had many different teachers, I have realized that every student learns in a unique way. Some people need to see the material, others need to write it out for themselves, and some need to hear the material in order to retain it. I usually try several different approaches until I see a positive response from the student. I also believe that you don’t know something until you can teach it to someone else; I encourage my students to re-explain things to me in their own words allowing me to be sure they’ve understood the lesson. It took me years to come into my academic stride, so I have the patience to deal with children that are not performing as would be expected, because some kids need a little more time and attention than some of their peers.
Through several different institutions I have had the opportunity ... read more

I have a range of experiences which help make me a superior candidate to tutor. I have lived and studied in Barcelona, Spain. During this experience I learned a lot about Spanish culture and brought my Spanish to a mastery level. A Little Bit About Me...

I first assess the needs of each individual student since all students learn with different styles. Some students learn better verbally while other students need to see the words, phrases, and how the language is structured. Therefore, in addition to what the student comes to the tutoring session to master, for enrichment purposes if it fits the students situation, I use a variety of texts such as books, magaizines, newspaper articles, and with the Internet, I can also have videos of Spanish news clips, songs by popular Spanish artists, and even online educational games that exercise what the student has learned. Also, I have learned that all students require repetition and daily usage to maintain the information that they have learned.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to adapt my style to the student's personality and learning style. Some students learn best through visual methods, some auditory and some prefer experiential learning. While textbooks often provide a good foundation, I like to use "real world" teaching if possible. For example, I might have a student act out a situation (renting a car, for example) that he or she may encounter in real life. I am also very patient and this is a key factor for good tutoring.
