My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Lang based learning disability

My niece was having difficulty with learning to read. She attended a well known reading center, which did not improve her reading skills. Then she was diagnosed with a language based learning disability. I began researching and I found the Orton- Gillingham training program. I began training and tutoring at the Akron Learning Center. I have also tutored reading for A+ Abilities Plus. I continue to work with my niece and she recently score advanced on all areas of the OGT's.
I teach using a multisensory approach. I also teach from the known to the unknown.

Experienced teaching students with learning differences

Students learn in a positive learning environment. Everyone is unique thus everyone has unique learning styles. I focus on the positives each student has achieved and then, together the student and I strengthen the areas that need improvements. For example, there has been a recent emphasis on time test for all math operations. Personally, I believe this is testing the student test taking skills more than their math ability. I believe this can cause test anxiety issues. As a substitute teacher, I have reviewed the results of students’ test and made custom flashcards for the few math facts they need to memorize. I put them in an envelope for them with a note to memorize one or two at a time. I suggest placing one at their placemat and the other math flashcard where brush their teeth.

Learning is always easier when it is fun and interesting. In any given teaching situation I look for ways to add zest to learning. At the outset of tutoring I do an assessment of where students are currently achieving in a specific subject area, and identify skills that they may be lacking. Next, I develop a learning plan with specific goals. This becomes the basis for a learning contract between myself and the person seeking tutoring. Learning is best achieved in an interactive teaching style where students are encouraged to ask questions and participate in problem solving. I am a patient person who believes that all students can successfully learn.
My undergraduate years at Princeton University instilled in me a passion for learning and a personal commitment to academic excellence. Most of my adult work life has been focused on coaching individuals to overcome handicaps and maxi ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel my style of teaching is one of being a facilitator. I choose to interact with the student by asking questions so enabling them to reach the answer through their own thinking processes. The excitement of seeing their confidence build as they realize they can figure out problems independently is the reward of being an educator. I believe my job is to guide and support the student.
My teaching experience started teaching in a pre-school with 4 year olds. I then taught 3rd grade for 1 year and kindergarten for 9 years. When I updated my certificate (just in the last year) I did some teaching in a mildly handicapped resource room.

More About This Tutor...

I have been a teacher in Cleveland for the past 18 years. I have taught children ages 5 to 12 with a wide variety of abilities, interests, and personalities. Working with these children, their parents, and therapists has given me a wealth of experience and ideas.
One of the best part of being a special education teacher is the flexiblity. With the child's parent, I can decide on the most pertinent goals that will lead this child to succeed in school and beyond. I am also able to teach in a manner that best suits each child, his interests, and abilities. I want students to share my philosophy that learning takes effort but it can be enjoyable with the right attitude.

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to teach by utilizing real-life situations that are pertinent to the subject matter. In my opinion, when you are able to bring the subject matter to life by making it relevant to the students you are teaching, there is a greater chance that the student will not only understand the information, but remember it long after they leave the classroom.
As a classroom aid, I was responsible for implementing the curriculum developed by the teacher. I also had the opportunity to work one-on-one with students who needed additional assistance. As an assistant teacher, my duties included but were not limited to curriculum development, facilitating parent teacher conferences, and accurate record keeping of the student's progress. To date, I have earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in psychology and two minors in sociology and justice studies. I also have a Masters degree ... read more

Striving to make the student feel comfortable is part of my basic repertoire of teaching strategies. I know that when a student does not succeed in a typical classroom environment it is easy for the student to feel negative about learning. Our society is based on the 'cookie cutter' ideology one size fits all. So when I tutor I strive for the student to feel comfortable first. Then I observe the students way of learning and I tailor my style to fit the student. Each student has one to two modalities that they excel in when learning something new - my job is to discover which modalities best serves the student's style of learning.
Tutoring students is a big part of teaching. I have always tutored students in my classes and anyone who has asked for my help. I have tutored students on their writing, reading and basic math skills. Being a Special Education teacher has afforded ... read more

I love to teach and have a passion for working with students with disabilities. I believe all children can learn, but many have their own individual learning style. My goal is to modify and accommodate those students, so that they are able to succeed and receive a high quality education. I am extremely patient, organized, and creative. I enjoy trying a variety of approaches until I find what works best for each individual child. I believe as educators we are responsible for setting up our students for success. We should give them many opportunities to learn through their own discoveries, so they can take some ownership over their learning and feel motivation and pride in what they have accomplished.
