My comments on tutoring Psychology : Have experience in providing individual and group tutoring college students for general psychology courses.

My first focus in on developing rapport with the student and also discussing what they (or their parent/s) may be looking for from a tutor. I like to take a positive and developmental approach which focuses on building in goals and building on the success of those goals. Also finding out how the student learns or likes to learn, and assessing what has been successful/not so successful in the past for learning a subject. I like to end each session with of review of the student relaying what he or she has learned, as this can really help with retention of information.

Psychology is one of my top subjects! I have a minor in psychology at the bachelor level, and am working on my masters' degrees in community mental health counseling and school counseling.

I began tutoring in high school, as a sophomore. I started tutoring freshmen, and continued throughout my high school career. I would also often lead study groups with friends. In college, I was never an official tutor. However, I would lead study groups with friends. I have a strong background in sociology, which was my undergraduate major. I minored in psychology as well. I am currently getting my masters' degrees in both community mental health counseling, and in school counseling, which has significantly added to my previous knowledge of the field of psychology. I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. I love to learn, and when sharing that knowledge, my ultimate goal is to leave the student with a spark that will hopefully motivate them to pursue the subject above and beyond the lesson. Motivation, learning style, and goal structure are components I consider when setting up a lesson. As a computer programmer, I tend to be task oriented. I like to break a project into smaller chunks with clear boundaries. I believe that having the student participate in defining these goals helps them focus, keeps them from getting overwhelmed, and gives them a way to measure their own success. I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way.
