My undergraduate experience has given me both breadth and depth in academic subjects. I enjoy the process of helping students to learn. It is a great experience to see their minds grasp a new concept or idea. I realize that each student is an individual and as such may have a different learning style than another. My goal is to facilitate that learning so they feel and are successful in conquering the lessons to be learned. I have had a variety of experiences as a teacher. I, at first, worked as a substitute for about 3 years. Then I worked as a 3rd-grade teacher in a private school for one year. Because of enrollment that position was cut. I went back to subbing for a time. From 2004-2009 I have worked for the Dallas School District as a personal tutor. I primarily worked with middle school-high school students. After returning to college to get my teaching certificate I taught 5th grade for one year. I then taught at a high school in Salinas, California for four years. As an elementary teacher I taught all subjects except science. I taught various history and social studies classes to the high school students including World History, honors U.S. History, Psychology and Current Events. I left teaching in 1992 to attend law school but have volunteered as a mentor on several occasions which has allowed me the opportunity to tutor children in both elementary and middle school. I have always seen teaching as a matter of reigniting a natural curiosity which all students have, and directing it toward an academic subject. My priority as a tutor is to help students feel confident about their own ability to master the material. For each student this requires a different approach, so I try various methods of teaching and of working on tasks with each student, until we find one that works for him or her.
