A Little Bit About Me...

The majority of my experience lies within the field of Human Services/Counseling. However, I have substitute taught for about 18 months, elementary level and high school level. In addition, I have tutored foreign languages on a college level for two semesters.
I have always enjoyed teaching. I try to take into consideration the individual's learning style when teaching. Many kids learn best when a "hands on" approach is incorporated into the lecture or instruction. I am laid back, patient, have a good sense of humor, and have never had difficulties connecting with youth of all ages. Sometimes, I have used creative ways to teach. I feel it is important to hold the interest of a student and ignite a childs' natural curiosity.

I have found, through teaching a wide variety of people a wide variety of subjects, that there is no one way to reach someone. Everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses. What I have found, however, is requisite to meet the needs of all students is respect for the learner. Without the requisite respect and encouragement, struggling students find it easy to give up and continue to believe that they aren't able to learn the material being presented. My certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) gave me a familiarity with mathematics and statistics, as well as conventions of scientific research and reporting. My MA required a publication-ready thesis, which would not have been possible without organization and self-motivation.

My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my business to find and implement better methods of educating people on mathematics in a way that does not overwhelm them, but simultaneously makes their learning experience more useful.
