I think students sometimes do need a little extra help when it comes to schoolwork. My own experience has been that when I talk over an assignment with someone I often perceive it in a way that I would not have otherwise. I consequently listen to my students and work to help them see problems in more than one way before giving up. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge.
