I have been researching the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets because I plan on using them as a base for the children that I work with at Community Action Duluth through the Circles of Support program. I believe that teaching children academic skills while building assets within them is necessary for a healthy community. My approach to teaching involves finding the best learning venue for each individual student. I don't believe in 'fitting' the student to the method, rather finding the method that works for each individual. I use phonetics when that is the simplest method, the challenge of games/competition when that is what clicks for my student. I have even used graphics to create a learning environment for students who lack imagination! When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. As the manager and head chemist of a solid fuels testing laboratory I have many years of experience training both high school and college interns. I acquired a Bachelors of Science in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry from the University of MN, Duluth. I also have a broad math and physics background, and have a great enthusiasm for both.
