I offer 16 years of English writing instructional experience. I have taught a diverse range of students, both in terms of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Instructional areas include English as a second language, developmental concerns, creative writing and poetry (I am a published poet), professional and technical writing. I have also provided SAT and AP preparation tutoring. I have worked with college students in the past, working with comprehensive learning and mathematics. I learned that each student understands in their own personal way; some learn by seeing something concrete and for others it is working through the steps in the problem that helps them understand. I have also had the experience of teaching a freshman seminar class where the focus was finding the students strong point or drive and having them research their major or likes to find what job fields might fit them well. I love teaching all ages, but have experience working with college freshman. I believe that these students are at an age where they need to realize their dreams and need help to gain confidence within themselves. My strong point is within Math, but also comprehension. Teach it. Repeat it. Practice It. Discuss it. What went right? WHat went wrong? What did they learn. Egg Cartons and White boards are my favorite manipulatives. Often mistakes are the best teachers. My father was my first math mentor. He graduated from West Point - and tutored his roommate John Saxon. John developed the Saxon method. The next influencer was Investigations - the math program used at West School in New Canaan, CT where I did my student teaching. That program taught me to do "break apart" math - which teaches math independence. I have done more substitute teaching at all grade levels - and often play "Mental Math" with white boards -which the kids love. They work in teams and get the adrenaline rush of beating the clock and the teacher. This methodology - has worked really well for AD&D kids.

My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.
