A Little Bit About Me...

The past ten years for me have been spent teaching English and theology in a third-world setting in Africa, Nigeria to be specific. I have been responsible for organizing and overseeing the curriculum as well as classroom teaching since 1998. I was also a teacher at a Community College in Dallas, TX for a year. During my undergraduate degree, I was involved in tutoring English and math for students who were struggling. I feel that my academic knowledge as well as the practical experience I have gained over the years qualify me to help tutor students in English and math.

I was formerly a high school English Teacher and an ESL teacher. I taught one year overseas teaching English as a second language. For two years, I was an education supervisor at the Hawaii Job Corps, and it was my job to ensure that the students' academic needs were being met. I excelled at that job, but had to leave as I moved back to the mainland. I worked as both a tutor and a teacher for many years (10) and loved my career. I enjoy working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. To be an effective teacher/tutor, I must first learn the student's learning style.I am not a big fan of the standardized tests, in fact, I believe that many children and young adults may suffer from test anxiety. When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment. Once that learning environment is created, teaching is easy. I have worked with difficult students. One, who we will call John, has Autism, Schizophrenia, and vomits when upset.
