A Little Bit About Me...

The past ten years for me have been spent teaching English and theology in a third-world setting in Africa, Nigeria to be specific. I have been responsible for organizing and overseeing the curriculum as well as classroom teaching since 1998. I was also a teacher at a Community College in Dallas, TX for a year. During my undergraduate degree, I was involved in tutoring English and math for students who were struggling. I feel that my academic knowledge as well as the practical experience I have gained over the years qualify me to help tutor students in English and math.

For two years, I was an education supervisor at the Hawaii Job Corps, and it was my job to ensure that the students' academic needs were being met. I excelled at that job, but had to leave as I moved back to the mainland. I worked as both a tutor and a teacher for many years (10) and loved my career. I have been a substitute teacher with the Boise School District for the past 6 years now. I have also worked for the company, Club Z tutoring. I have both a Bachelors degree as well as a Masters degree (academically) but still need to pass the Praxis II test and then student teach before I can apply for my own classroom. I prefer working with elementary age students and my speciality areas are reading, grammar, spelling, and some math. For the last five years, I have been helping children and adolescents with disabilities and, more recently, tutoring students at BSU. After five and a half years at BSU, I graduated with an elementary education degree. I have a background in mathematics and science, as both were previous majors I chose to pursue. When teaching mathematics, I believe that over half of my job is social skills. Calming my students down, easing their frustration, and making them feel comfortable is over half the battle. It isn't that mathematics is too hard for most people, it is just too frustrating for most people. So my job is to set my client at ease and to create a learning environment.
