I find that teaching is as much about getting to know each person, finding there strengths and weaknesses and using those to benefit them in their process of understanding. I like to come up with creative approaches that will suit each individual's strengths for learning. I know that one on one attention, support and encouragement is a large component of what is missing in a lot of today's public school classrooms and love the opportunity that tutoring can provide to children who can learn just as well as anyone else, but may not be finding success in the classroom. I am a native of Puerto Rico. I learned English as a second language at the age of 11 years old. I recall the difficulty I had in learning the English language while at the same time trying to make it through the 5th grade. The task was frustrating and often overwhelming. The few teachers who made the effort to tutor me individualy were the ones who made the difference in my academic life. I would like to put my experience to use as a tutor who once walked a mile in the shoes of a young person who is striving to excell but is having difficulties due to a language barrier.
As a former U.S.Army academics instructor, I have taught several hundred students from many countries in South and Central America as well as Mexico. I love children. I love teaching children new things. I have great patience. I love helping children reach their full potential and discover new things. In the past I Substitute taught Kindergarten through 8th grade at all subjects for one year. I also taught preschool for one year.
