A Little Bit About Me...

Currently, I work for the Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa school districts as a home instructor for grades 6 to 12. I enjoy working with the kids one on one and feel wonderful about helping them stay up to date with their school work until they are physically able to return to the regular classroom setting. Aside from home instruction, I also work regularly as a substitute for Saratoga County schools, and have built up a great working relationship with all faculty and students in each building that I am assigned. Prior to working for Saratoga Springs, I taught 1st grade for two years at PS 325 which is located in Manhattan. I had a very successful run at PS 325, and I am proud of my accomplishments with the children especially in the area of mathematics and reading. Lacking opportunities at home, many of my children faced incredible challenges when it came to learning thus I had ... read more

After graduating from Baruch College, I worked in the inner-city Catholic School of Brooklyn. I taught 8th Grade English and had great success turning non-writers into eager learners. I was also the Math coordinator for grades 5-8. I have tutored college entrants having difficulty with essay writing. Most recently, I taught 5th Grade in a local charter school. The successful preparation of students to communicate via written skills has been a component of all my teaching experiences.
My style of teaching is predicated on the knowledge that each child is an individual learner. Identification of students needs makes teaching more interesting to both teacher and learner. I also like to have the child discover the importance of an education. Answer the need to know what's in it for me? Motivation!!!! After finding the motivator the rest is easy. I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented. Finding a new way is something I have practiced in school and at BOCES, and is my greatest strength as a teacher.
I hold an English degree from a program that largely overlapped with Education - basically, I have studied teaching as a student at college. On the other end of the spectrum, I have been a substitute educator for Capital Region BOCES for 3 years, working with teaching professionals on short-term assignments. Through this experience I believe I have gathered a good deal of craft in the a ... read more

Compassion and developing an understanding underlie my approach and I believe that students that know victory in any one arena can find it again in the academic world. I firmly believe that a path of service is a key to a greater self esteem, as I give of myself to help students reach their highest good, so often do we find it that students will pay it forward and teach what they most need to learn and learn that which they most need to teach. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been an amateur tutor ever since high school, when I tutored classmates for free. I spent 6 years as a nuclear trained electrician in the US Navy, 10 years in academia where I studied and taught psychology, biology, and communications, and the past 10 years in retail management. I took it upon myself to conduct impromptu training sessions in many different areas of study while in the Navy, and actively helped shipmates engaged in external study programs. I implemented a tutoring program for pre-med and pre-vet students and others while a member of Beta-Beta-Beta (the National Honor Society for Biology) at Southern Illinois University. I have used my teaching and training skills in innumerable situations as a retail manager. I am a life-long learner and actively acquire and absorb lectures on cd in many disciplines through The Teaching Company.

More About This Tutor...

As a professional educator, I am dedicated to seeing all students succeed. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a BA in History and a BA in English, as well as New York State certification and my MAT Social Studies. I have tutored throughout my academic career, and continue to teach and tutor in a wide variety of subjects.
I am a strong believer in Multiple Intelligences. I know that first I must learn who my students are and how they learn if I am to teach them successfully. I employ the Socratic method often possible, and keep lessons as student-centered as possible. I frequently make use of the students' interests and technology to engage them. Students thrive when they see the usefulness of what they are learning, and when techniques are adapted to their needs.
