My comments on tutoring Spelling : As a journalist who routinely faces deadlines that loom only five minutes away, I have never had the luxury of casually running a spell-check or referencing a dictionary. Internalizing the correct spelling of countless words serves as an indispensable skill in my profession. And for what it's worth, I know the tricks needed to assume spelling mastery, which I suppose accounts for my having advanced to regional spelling-bee competition as a youth.

I am foremost a writer whose 38-year, award-winning career is rooted in journalism. However, I also have an extensive teaching background. I have taught writing labs at St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93); and I currently offer tutoring services to 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students from all over the world. My comments on tutoring Spelling : I know phonics very well and am interested in word origins, both of which make spelling much easier to understand and learn!

I treat children with the same respect and dignity that I treat adults, regardless of their age. I don't use "baby voices," as my goal is to elevate them to their highest academic levels. I've been told I'm a "cool" teacher by students because I treat them "like people, not kids." I use humor whenever appropriate, if that "hooks" a student. I do whatever is necessary to engage the individual personalities of each child and endeavor to make whatever it is I'm teaching them meaningful to their immediate lives.

Over the Top (and not too expensive)

My teaching style has always been about quality. I know that whatever I teach today, will last forever with my students. So if I don't teach, they wouldn't learn anything and I never wanted anyone to ever say "She didn't teach us anything while we were in her class." A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored all subjects - especially in Math all through High School. I also tutored in college. I have strong skills in Math - all levels - but I especially enjoy algebra. I have two children and I basically taught my oldest son math, since he was a different kind of learner than the way they teach at school. He is a very kinesthetic type learner and needs to see, feel and touch to understand the concepts - so I used a lot of tools to help him. I can tutor math and science exceptionally well and other subjects for the younger levels.
