Composition is one of my top subjects! My award-winning writing career spans 38 years. Accolades include a Katie Award and three “Council for Advancement and Support of Education” awards. I have been published in national newspapers and magazines, as well as on-line. My syndicated column, “Lone Star Legends,” has appeared in 48 newspapers throughout Texas. Additionally, I have worked as a journalist in radio and television broadcast (most recently with CSPAN). Teaching experience includes having supervised writing labs at St. Thomas University -- Miami, Fla. (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93). I have also taught composition at the fifth through eighth grade levels and currently tutor 10th and 11th grade foreign exchange students in all areas related to writing. Additionally, the College Board contracts me each year to assess essays students submit as part of their SAT testing. In a similar fashion, Pearson Education, Inc. employs me each year to assess essays students -- grades 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 – submit as part of standardized testing in the states of Arizona, California, Texas and West Virginia.

Reading, Writing, and More

I have no set style of teaching. I try to understand how to benefit the individual by examining their needs. Then, we go from there. Some students need an analytical approach, so the material can best be presented as a formula. Others need a creative approach. It really just depends on the student.
I have a Bachelors in English Literature w/a certificate in Technical Writing from the University of North Texas. I have put myself through school by working as server part-time. My comments on tutoring Composition : I have taken upper level English courses for the past six years.

My teaching style is a demonstrator. I like teacher-centered classes with an emphasis on demonstration and modeling. I try to act like a role model by demonstrating skills and processes and then as a guide in helping students develop apply theses skills and knowledge.
I have student taught for the past seven years. I have tutored countless individuals in English, Drama and American Sign Language. I am fluent in ASL and am very confident in my ability to teach others the beautiful language. Over the Top (and not too expensive)

My teaching style has always been about quality. I know that whatever I teach today, will last forever with my students. So if I don't teach, they wouldn't learn anything and I never wanted anyone to ever say "She didn't teach us anything while we were in her class." I also know that I have a job to come to every day and so do the students. I want to want to come to work and I want my students to want to want to come to school, but still learn.
