Ex-classroom school teacher with 10 years plus experience!

My teaching style is one that always tries to relate to the child and to have fun. Does the child enjoy video games, dinosaurs, soccer, dance, or a particular cartoon character? When I discover what it is the child enjoys, I bring that element into the subject we are learning about. If the child likes soccer and struggles in reading, I research about famous soccer players and find books on them. Perhaps, at the end of a teaching session, we go outside and kick the soccer ball for 5 minutes as a source of inspiration to get work completed. Bringing in other ways of learning through play and games is also something I enjoy. Playing simple math games or reading games is a easy way to teach a child, without them realizing they are learning.

Learning can be fun and exciting; it's all in our attitude!

I love working with students and my style is direct teaching; I feel that a student needs to master the concept being taught before moving on to the next level.
I have been in education for 18 years. I started in special education and general education. I taught math, English, reading, science, and history. I also taught the GED and the state test (CA). I tutored all subjects to homebound students. I facilitated reading programs and held workshops for teachers that taught special needs students. I was also a high school counselor for 5 years and have my credential in school psychology

ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects!

Unorthodox is the best way to describe my teaching style. Unorthodox in that I will change my approach or activities based on student comprehension. Unorthodox in that I truly believe that for every student who is confused or doesn’t understand a concept, there is a teacher who didn’t do their job. My greatest strength lies in creating lessons and activities where students will want to engage. Engagement leads to a permanent investment. When a student is engaged by a lesson, they will remember that lesson. To introduce Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” my students played "Who's crazier: Edgar Allan Poe or Mrs. W’s Mom or Dad???” After reading a series of statements such as: “Removed tires from daughter’s car for talking back” “Married his first cousin,” students would guess if it was Poe or my mom/dad. The level of participation in class that day and the days that followed wa ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As an experienced Plano ISD teacher I have had the opportunity to provide students with effective instruction to meet their individual needs. I have taught all subjects in third grade for nine years. For the past five years I have also been teaching the advanced math class. I specialize in TAKS test preparation, Reading, Math, and Writing.
I believe that children learn best when they are having fun. My goal as an educator is to instill a love of learning in students. If a child can take ownership of his or her learning, they will reach a greater level of comprehension and retain what they have learned.

I work with students very well. I make sure that they are able to connect with me, and enjoy the process of learning. It's important to like what you are studying, so that you can get the most out of it. I feel as though it is necessary for them to enjoy the setting they are in, and I do my best to accommodate them. Learning should not be something that students do not look forward to, contrary; they should be excited to learn something new. I make sure that this is one of my goals, so that they can get the ultimate satisfaction and have that desire to solve the problems and answer the questions on their own. I don't just consider it tutoring, I consider it mentoring.
Due to my desire to increase my knowledge, I graduated a year early from my university with a BA in Psychology, and a minor in Political Science. I am currently in Graduate School, majoring in Community Counseling. Th ... read more
