I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.

I have two English-related degrees from the University of Miami, Print Journalism and Creative Writing (Poetry Focus). Since graduating in 2005, I have worked as a teacher in South Korea, Miami Beach, FL, and here in the greater Pensacola area. My classes have ranged from large groups of 30 or more, to private one-on-one sessions with individual students. I have also written for many newspapers and magazines, both domestic and foreign, so I know how to communicate in the most effective and concise way possible.
In the past, my classes have lasted up to three hours at a time. Thus, I have been forced to implement new methodologies in order to not only keep my students focused and interested, but continually learning as well. I incorporate fun activities such as creative writing and music into my lessons while still closely following the curriculum. I believe that education can be bo ... read more

College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or understand the material, and exercising hands-on work and examples to ensure the student can apply what they have learned.
I love the written word and reaching people, so I ultimately chose to major in journalism. My love for teaching and instructing students led me to pursue my minor in education. A Little Bit About Me...

I have logged over 125 hours in a classroom. I worked with third graders during FCAT prep time. I have also spent over 30 hours working with ESOL students on vocabulary, phonics, and math. Currently, I am completing my student teaching. I work with second grade students. Working at the school I am at has provided me with a challenging experience. It is a D school which requires the teachers to work much harder. My class has the best grades out of all of the second grade class and it is because of the hard work the core teacher and I put in each day. I have passed both state exams (K-6 Subject Area and Professional). I will graduate with my bachelors on April 30, 2011. My diploma will be for Elementary Education K-6, Reading, and ESOL.

I love teaching and history. I believe that anybody can learn anything. I think if someone has not learned something it is because someone has not taught it to them at all or they have not been taught in the right way. I believe anyone can reach a high education level if they are nurtured by educators who believe in them and are patient.
At the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga I received an excellent education where I got my BA in History with a minor in Sociology. There I was taught by excellent professors who instilled in me passions for history, sociology, and intellectual discussion. I also wrote many papers which have given me good grammatical skills. I also gave many speeches and took part in many discussions which have given me good speaking skills. I want to apply this education and experience by working as a tutor for you.
