A Little Bit About Me...

While pursuing my Master's degree, I taught several sections on Civil Engineering principles. I also held office hours to tutor students in any other classwork where they were in need of assistance. Subjects ranges from physics to structural mechanics to hydrology to fluid mechanics.
My teaching style is perhaps not as Socratic as I would prefer. I first elucidate the principles being considered, and then use a practical means to illustrate and work with that principle. I like to have the student learn to derive what is being taught for themselves. That way the material will stay with them. Grounding the material being learned in some real-life experience makes knowledge meaningful and useful. That is what I endeavor to achieve.

A good environment is essential to learning. A rich learning environment that cares about the deficiency needs so that intellectual achievement may occur. They will know where they stand. Students will have ideas. Those ideas will be considered valuable. Modeling and scaffolding will be used to create a foundation for learning. The success will create more motivation. Wait time will increase so students can make better responses. Constructivism will be used so the students can apply, and link the lesson to prior knowledge in a way they can retain it. . There will be some use of application assessment to see if students can apply in another setting what they have learned.
