Educator for 17+ years seeking to help with our tomorrow!

I'll be honest. My "students" from the past have told me that during the time when I was actually sitting down and tutoring/working with them, they didn't even notice that they were actually doing the work. What I do when I try to make the "students" learn is to make them see what the books are trying to say to them through what we see through our eyes, in our world, every day. For example, if the book says: 7 - x = 4, I would be telling the child/adult, "Imagine if you had 7 dollars in your hand." I would then ask them, "How many do I need to take away (subtract) for you to have 4 dollars?" When working with the lower kids, I even use the actual objects and lay them on tables in front of me and show to them so they don't have to use their imagination to figure it out. Or if the page has picture on it, just cross them out if subtracting, or draw more if adding.

I was an elementary school teacher for 10 years in the Ukraine. I taught Ukrainian and Russian languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies to the students of 1-4 grades. A Little Bit About Me...

"Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire." This quote by William Butler Yeats summarizes my philosophy of education. I love seeing students become excited about learning and becoming self-directed learners. Oftentimes, this means that the student takes the lead and I am there mainly to provide encouragement and structure. I try to provide a safe environment for learning. I believe there are no dumb questions and it is OK to make mistakes. I encourage students to brainstorm and think outside the box. A Little Bit About Me...

My motto is one that I adapted from my high school, which is learn by doing. Most students aren't auditory learners, so if I simply spout off a bunch of facts or a mathematical process, then chances are they won't learn anything. After laying the foundation first, the best method of learning is for the student to actually do it themselves. This method of learning by doing has been effective and makes both teaching and learning fun and enjoyable.
I graduated from CSU Fresno with a BA in Chemistry and a BS in Biology. Since then, I have been a substitute teacher for two months for elementary school grades k-8.
