I believe students are like little sponges. They're taking in everything around them. Obviously, if you fill their heads with garbage, they will learn garbage. As a first grade teacher, I became very experienced and well versed in balanced literacy frameworks. This passed year, all 22 of my students showed impressive gains in their reading/phonics skills assessment based on Fountas and Pinnell, that I was required to give three times a year.
