Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.
I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.

Writing is one of my top subjects! I have very strong skills in teaching the basics in writing. Often times I have found that many students do not have a strong foundation in sentence or paragraph structure. Once these skills have been firmly established, I then have students concentrate on their use of vocabulary, expression, and description in their writing.

I like to make learning as fun as possible. I strive to inspire students to want to learn rather than just teach. Communication is a key is a factor in my teaching. Communication between parents and teacher is essential in meeting the students needs.
Special Education Instructional Assistant for 8 years (2000 to 2008) I assisted students needing help with reading, writing, and/or math at the elementary and middle school levels. Special Education Teacher: (2009 to current): I teach students with mild to moderate learning disabilities reading, writing, and math.

In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. I personally believe in studying with the purpose of applying the subject in the real world, and will work with your student to develop a solid purpose for the material, as well as help him/her see how to apply the material. In time, it is my goal that your student will be able to study on his/her own, without my help, and be able to fully comprehend and use the data.

I would say that my style is one of direction. Helping students find answers, teaching them how to research for the answers and developing paths of choices to determine which one to take and determining the outcome of that choice or the alternatives. I feel better challenging them to use their thinking skills, their cognitive processing skills & decision making skills. Every child, I believe, learns differently and a good tutor or teacher, takes the time to find that out for the student(s) they are working with. Success is important for growth, independence and adulthood.
I have over 20 years experience in training individuals in materials related to their employment & career preparation. I've also worked as a CASA worker in Idaho and had to prepare reports for the courts/judges review to determine placement of at risk cildren. Every child has a window of time when learning to write and read is at its peak. I’ve observed this can begin as early as three or four years of age. Yet the child who discovers his/her fascination with language at the age of eight is no less gifted. So I believe patiently leading children through auditory, kinesthetic and auditory learning channels will grant them opportunities to learn rapidly. Methods like Nellie Edge’s “Early Literacy” or the “Right to Read” program offer them these chances at appropriate ages in the classroom. Tutoring offers exceptional chances at all ages because nothing matches one-on-one assistance.
The voyage of deepening a child’s enthusiasm to write and read well is so delightful and satisfying! This revelation didn’t come in my writing courses in high school or college but when I taught my four children to read and write. Now that they’re all in colleg ... read more

Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, or sensory learner and teach to those senses. I would need to tailor my lesson plans by making the information more interactive for students who have special needs or are English language learners to make sure that they are learning the information. I would have more cooperative group activities and hands-on tasks that the students could engage in, such as a webquest activity in the computer lab. Graphic organizers are always good tools to use.
My background includes an undergraduate degree in History and ... read more

I benefited from the liberal arts education I received from the University of Puget Sound, which offered a diverse selection of classes and an exploratory environment in which to pursue my studies. For two years, I studied Chemistry and Biology while also taking classes in the Humanities. During my undergraduate years, I studied in Oaxaca, Mexico and received a grant for summer research. Upon graduation I spent a year doing anthropology research in Peru on a Fulbright grant, while also becoming fluent in Spanish and learning a third language, Quechua.

I am a strong believer in interrelating knowledge in diverse areas and illuminating its applications to real life in the belief that students are more motivated to learn when the relevance of that learning is clear to them. Students must not simply believe that they have acquired knowledge, but that they have gained understanding if the knowledge is to make any real difference in their lives. I believe it is important, especially with children, to respect the intelligence of the student, and to that end I employ a great deal of Socratic method. I seek to broaden the horizons of all my students, and impart a deeper appreciation for the world and the cosmos that we inhabit through every subject.
I hold BAs in History and Modern Languages (German/French), and have done graduate work in Theology and French Translation. This background has given me a broad understanding across the huma ... read more
