My name is Briana and my college major is Elementary Education with endorsements in ESOL and Reading. At the University of West Florida I have maintained a 3.6 GPA and have been on the Dean’s List and the President’s List. This is an important achievement. However, I do not take this to be my greatest asset. It is my belief that my love for children and desire to see them learn, even as I increase my knowledge, is of greater value. During my college career I have made myself available to volunteer outside the classroom. I have worked in schools, science fairs, church schools, and other organizations. In participating in these events I have learned from others by observing and being a part of the educational experience. It is not a duty, but an opportunity.

For the past eight years I have been working in the Nashville, TN area. My first year there I worked as a site director for the YMCA before and afterschool program. After leaving the YMCA, I got a teaching job for the Metro Nashville public schools teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. While teaching, I enjoyed working with small groups of students that were below reading level. I taught for 7 years and loved every minute of it. I move back to Alabama to get married and I am currently looking for a job teaching in Baldwin County.
I enjoy working with kids and have been doing it for many years. I believe all children can learn but not all children learn the same way. In my past expereience, I have found you often have to go outside the box to find what works and try many different methods. I feel very strongly about small group learning and think it is very effective when it is done in the ri ... read more

As a college graduate, I desire to constantly succeed at my efforts on a daily basis. I earned two bachelor degrees, BS in Social Counseling and BS in Behavioral Management, which has lead me into the helping profession. I also possess an AA degree in juvenile delinquency, which helps me deal with even the most difficult children of all ages. Due to the positions I have held, I needed to have extensive skills in writing and also math. I held a 3.3 and above while in college.
I have always loved to work with children. My job while in college was teaching children at a learning center. I also have tutored several children throughout the years that were having difficulties in either math or English. I have a strong background in math and English, but also have experience in psychology, sociology, and science. I believe a child can achieve whatever they put their mind to, but some time ... read more

I started tutoring math when I attended Faulkner State College. I then attended the University of South Alabama where I tutored math and physics. I have tutored all levels of math and also tutored not only physics, but lab activites as well.
I have always been a quick learner when it comes to mathematics. It is something that comes almost natural to me. With that said, I understand that this is not the case for everyone. I feel that a good majority of people hate math because they don't understand math, and because they don't understand math right away, they don't try to understand it. I had a wise professor once tell me, "Math isn't difficult; there is no such thing as difficult math. It just seems difficult because you haven't learned it yet". I think math can be easy for anyone, they just have to learn it first.

I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. After ten years working in law enforcement, I switched to social services and I have been mentoring children in foster care for the past twenty years.
I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.

More About This Tutor...

I am still developing a teaching style. However, I know from personal experience that constructing knowledge requires much more than reading a textbook. All learners have unique learning styles that influence learning success. A student’s favored learning style is a valuable resource for a tutor, allowing the student to discover more about the world and themselves while simultaneously developing a joy for learning. I use informal assessments to instruct my instruction, and assist students to monitor their own learning progress. My strongest teaching tools are good listening skills, patience and perseverance, and a desire to find each student’s academic and creative strengths.
I am a recent graduate of the University of South Alabama, College of Education. I returned to school to earn a teaching certificate in elementary education so that I might expand my career in environmen ... read more

I have two years of experience teaching the English language to Taiwanese children and youth. I have also worked with at-risk children and youth in summer and after-school programs. In addition, I have one year of experience in curriculum development. In addition, I have earned a BA in political science (from a liberal arts college) and am currently working on a BS in accounting. Having taught children and youth from age 5 through 16, I can truly say that I enjoy the experience. The truest reward is the facial expresssion when a revelation of learning has occured, or a skill mastered. I believe that learning can be made more interesting by showing its relevance in everyday living. To meet the teaching objectives, I ... read more

I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Worship Leadership, and am currently working on a Master's in Elementary Education. I am also currently teaching myself Spanish and Mandarin. I have exceptional skills in grammar and writing, and I received a perfect score on both the Reading and English sections of the ACT in high school. My degree was writing-intensive, so I have extensive experience with writing research papers. In the past four years, I have taught piano, percussion, guitar, voice, and worked with K-3rd grade students after school at a local elementary school. I have also helped many students learn how to study properly (what to focus on, how long to study, where and when to study, etc).
