Once in a classroom I realized that I was meant to teach. I love working with students who are challenging and those who challenge me. I believe that I can become a better teacher only by continually challenging myself and my students. The key phrase “engaging students” seems less than what is required in the classroom. I want my students to be engaged but I want them to encompass and enjoy what they are doing as well. I was let go from a local company earlier this year. I have decided to make a career change and my goal is to teach math at the high school level. I have a year of college to be certified. I'm a full student at CCC, and will take the Pedagogy requirements at Elmira College. I intend to tutor and substitute teach this winter and spring during college. In industry, I was a Mechanical Engineer and spent time in management. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a MBA. I spent ten years in the Army and National Guard. If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

My teaching style is one on one with students making continuous progress at their own paces. I love to work with elementary students aged ten and under. Working with non-tradionat students was fun and challenging. I had to relate to them differently (of course) from the younger kids.
I taught Office Technology to adults for ten years. I have been subbing K-6 for the past two years in local school districts.
