A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired engineer who has been substitute teaching for about 4 years including several long term positions. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MS in teaching with addition coursework in Electrical Engineering and Math. My tutoring experience started in Adirondack Community College’s math lab where I was helping a wide variety of students get through their math classes.
I try to adapt my teaching style to the student. I keep trying different methods until we find what works best. This is probably why many of my students have told me that I am great at explaining things so they understand it. Being proficient at math is similar to being proficient at playing a musical instrument. You can’t learn to play an instrument by going to concerts and watching other people perform. Similarly, you can’t learn math by watching the teacher solve problems. I try to guid ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught inner city schools, public schools, private schools, alternative education school, summer school, adult classes and college extension courses; giving me a wide range of experiences with different students. Included are 15 years teaching Earth Science (NYS Regents) and 16 years teaching Living Environment/Biology (NYS Regents). Reviewing and preparing students for Regents Exams is a special interest area for me.
During my 30 years of teaching, I have developed many activities, demonstrations, discussions, and inquiry learning techniques to help students understand the concepts of science. For the past seven years, I have been tutoring after school. My teaching is visual and hands-on, with demonstrations, diagrams and examples from every-day life. I seek to discuss information with my students rather than lecture to them. I develop individualized programs based on a st ... read more

I love teaching and working with all children. I believe all children can learn, but each in different ways. I am a firm believer in teaching through discovery and in providing a creative approach to learning that appeals to all styles of learning. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences.
Currently, I work for the Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa school districts as a home instructor for grades 6 to 12. I enjoy working with the kids one on one and feel wonderful about helping them stay up to date with their school work until they are physically able to return to the regular classroom setting. A Little Bit About Me...

I fundamentally believe anyone can learn. If a student isn’t grasping a concept, it just means I have to change my style of teaching. So what is my teaching style…anything that helps a student achieve his or her potential. But the one thing I teach all my students is how to find their learning style. Once you know how you retain information you can do anything.
How do I summarize teaching in my life? I guess the best way to explain my teaching experience is to tell you a story. As a young girl I wanted to be a teacher. Because of my love of learning I taught all my siblings how to read. I know it is pretty funny but it is a true story. That led to my doing teaching seminars, which led to consulting, which led to training, which led to my working with individuals as a life coach. I have been a CEO, Vice President, Consultant, Senior Broker, Artist, Photographer, Glass Blowe ... read more

I am a doer who has shared his knowledge and experience in a variety of ways. When I worked as a photographer and filmmaker, I taught those subjects at many different institutions, from an after-school program for elementary school kids to NYU Graduate School. For many years now, I have worked as a science writer and editor. I mentor many newly minted Chinese scientists and engineers who work for IBM in Beijing, teaching them both English grammar and the proper form and style for peer-reviewed scientific papers they are writing. I developed and taught courses in Communications and Technical and Professional Writing for Marist College, Poughkeepsie NY.

A graduate of a top 20 university (University of Notre Dame), I have taken significant coursework in several relevant areas, particularly in mathematics. I have taken additional coursework at the graduate level at Boston College in the area of statistics. Besides my educational background, I have nearly 4 years of experience as an educator, ranging from serving as a tutor for my fellow students at Notre Dame in Calculus to acting as a Teaching Assistant and tutor for undergraduates at Boston College in statistics. Most recently, I tutored high school students in mathematics, helping them to significantly improve their grades. One of my students, for example, improved his score by over 60 percentiles!

A Little Bit About Me...

I teach others by learning and adapting myself. I love finding new and creative ways to explain familiar concepts. For my degree I had to take a year of chemistry, which I immediately fell in love with, even though I had hated it in high school. I found myself tutoring the other students in my class for fun and even took two organic chemistry classes as electives just because I thought it was so interesting. I consider my late discovery that I love earth science and chemistry to be proof that a seemingly difficult or impossible subject can be made easy and fun with the right point of view and attitude.
I hated science and math when I was in junior high and high school. When I asked my teachers questions, they didn't give me the answers I was looking for. Luckily, I got into a great university and found out, after taking a few core classes, that I actually love science. Once I rea ... read more

I love being able to teach someone something new. I love learning, but have always been a visual learner, so whether I'm teaching someone how to read, or simply helping them improve their reading skills, I introduce visual aids. I am patient, easy going and a great listener. When it comes to teaching/tutoring/mentoring, I have always been very hands on. I strive to create an environment where the pupil feels comfortable and he or she is excited to learn.
I graduated Cum Laude from Manhattan College with a double major in Psychology and Communications. In addition to studying for two majors, I was also a Division 1 athlete and held 2 jobs. Seeing as I was very busy with extracirricular activities, I believe that my graduating with honors was truly a testament to how hard I worked. Since college, I have worked in two jobs that have really tested my gramatical, reading, editing ... read more

As a recent graduate of Syracuse University (December 2009) with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, I am very familiar with the concepts taught in most Mathematics and Physics courses. I was a peer tutor for two years at Syracuse tutoring in the following subjects: Calculus I, II, and III, Probability, Statistics, Differential Equations, Physics I and II, Thermodynamics, and Fluid Mechanics. This has enabled me to hone my tutoring style to a point where it is concise yet readily understandable (something that is especially easy since I was very recently in the same position many of the students are right now).
As a recent student, I am very familiar with what it feels like to be in the position a lot of the students are in right now. At the same time, I understand the best method about how to approach understanding the material in the easiest manner possible. The key is patience and p ... read more

Generally in my experience I have a higher level of understanding of basic principles than my peers. This puts me in a position of frequently helping others understand subtleties of the material. There are many different ways of understanding any one concept, it is just a matter of finding one that relates to the particular student's experience or thought process. I simply try to find a way for the student to understand the material, and clarify any of the questions they may have.
I graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in Physics. I am currently a graduate student at SUNY Albany in the Physics Ph.D program. I have officially been a physics lab TA for one year, however before that I have helped many friends and acquaintances in physics and general math.
