Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.

I have graduated with dual B.S. degrees in Education and Political Science in 1972 in Odessa, Ukraine. My teaching experience includes 28 years of teaching chemistry, physics, Russian and Ukrainian languages in my native country of Ukraine. During these years I’ve taught many students varying in age from 13 to 18 years old. I’ve taught classes of Continuing Education for certified teachers in Ukraine. I recently graduated from Denison University with a B.S. in Biochemistry. While at Denison I participated in several work-study jobs centered around direct interaction with other students. I worked as a TA in an Organic Chemistry lab as well as a General Physics Lab. Additionally I served as a tutor for both General Physics as well as General and Organic Chemistry. The Chemistry position was in a setting called "Chem Spa" where I could have several students seeking help with homework or upcoming test preparations. I have also worked as both a high school baseball coach and a swim instructor for all ages. My background in chemistry is very strong as is my background in biology.

My teaching style is participatory. I like to ask questions of the student and have them verbalize what they know. This gives me the opportunity to identify possible gaps in their knowledge and to fill in those gaps. I also try to relate covered material to historical events. For instance, when talking about the importance of analytical chemistry, I like to talk about the Marsh test which was developed in the 1830’s as a definitive reaction for arsenic poisoning. In like manner, I like to relate covered material to the personal experiences of the student. Illustrative examples that I have used are the importance of distillation to the alcoholic beverage and petroleum industries, along with how companies like McDonald’s would employ chemists skilled in flavors and fragrances (i.e., flavorists).
