I find it partucularly useful to take time to get to know the student's interests so that I can relate each subject to things that the student is familiar with. Making this connection between a difficult concept and the student's personal areas of interest helps the student feel comfortable with the subject and therefore more confident thinking through each question presented. Once confidence is established, it becomes easier for students to develop an understanding of the subject area that can be applied without the tutor present.

Math can be fun and interesting if you have the right tools!

I have served as a guidance counselor in middle schools for almost forty years and retired in December, 2013. During the last twelve years, I have tutored students in math in groups and individually. I enjoy using incentives and finding ways to make concepts relative in the student's actual life experiences. I still hold a valid Florida certificate.

My comments on tutoring Homework Help : I have often helped kids with their homework in various subjects

I am graduating high school this year and I am the oldest of three children. My sister is in first grade and my brother is in PreK. After school we come home and work on homework and sight words. I have babysat family friends and neighbors for three years now. I completed two years of Early Childhood Education classes with a built-in VPK. In this program, we designed and taught our own lesson plans for the children in VPK. I have experience working with children ages 3-5 and teaching science, social studies and math skills. I am also certified in CPR.
I am patient and treat kids with the same respect I am given. since I am young, I believe teaching kids will be easier because I can understand any troubles they may be having and the material is fresh in my head.

I am a hands-on, visual learner, but not everyone is the same. I am able to adapt to each child's specific learning style. If I am explaining something and the student is unable to grasp the concept, I want them to feel completely comfortable asking me to explain it in a different way. In my time at Ashford I picked plenty of shareable skills, study skills, time management, and using my keyboard to it's fullest potential to meet deadlines. While training with the Computer Troubleshooter, I learned more about how to use software and typing/keyboard shortcuts to utilize computers to their full potential.
