When it comes to math, many kids can repeat the motions and get the right answer, but may not really understand what they are doing or why. I actually love the question, "When am I ever going to use this?" My style is open to discussion. I like to ask questions to the student about the knowledge they have and based on that, apply my knowledge to build a strong base to be used as a core to solve more problems. I live the one on one interaction but also love the group discussion. I used to tutor an entire classroom during summer for 6 hours straight.
I started around 2005 tutoring for the departments of chemistry and math in Queensborough Community College, from the basic levels in organic chemistry 2 and calculus. Patience. I would have to say, I would have to learn the needs of the student, what they already know and don't know, and use what they know to help them understand what they don't know. I would be fairly straightforward I guess.
