My comments on tutoring Special Education : I am currently a special education teacher in the Capistrano Unified School District. I have worked as a special ed. teacher for the past 7 years at the 4/5 grade level and this year at the k-2 level. Prior to that I was an istructional assistant in special education schools for 4 years. I have worked with students with the following qualifying conditions: autism, specific learning disabilities, speech and language imapairments, OHI ( other health impairments) ADD, hearing impaired,cognitive impairments, and emotiona disturbances. My first goal is to develop a trusting relationship with my student/students, find out what internal framework they possess, and identify motivational triggers. I am a Howard Gardner proponent, the developer of the multiple intelligences theory. He states, "The quesion is not if the student is smart but how are they smart." I believe in a whole child approach. Children are not just vessels we are able to pour information into. They are unique and dynamic beings that are affected by their emotions,genetics, and prior experiences. I seek to help them develop the skills that will give them a life of the greatest choice.

My teaching approach is eclectic as every child is a different child. One approach does not work for everyone and generally speaking I use a combination of instructional philosophies. No matter what technique, strategy or approach I use, the foundation of my instruction always starts with building a trusting relationship with the child built on caring and respect.

I work through positive behavior supports, humor and style to motivate the student to understand the need to learn the core subject matter in order to proceed through high school. I am excellent at reading the needs of the student and creating lessons that are relevant, interesting and fun.
I have taught all core subjects plus art history for over 20 years using various state mandated materials and supplementals I purchased through special ed catalogs. Student outcomes were best with the supplementals due to limited attention span and high interest-low level materials. All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter.
