In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come. I have been tutoring for many years. I started at Sylvan Learning Centers, where I was there for two and one half years. I am proud to say I was successful in that I helped many students and that I was able to do this over a wide range of student needs. Some of this included teaching the SAT preparation course, both the English and math sides. I have also had students who I tutored in their home. This included some advanced math students. My passion is for empowering young adults; perhaps the mantra is "educate to elevate". I have been told I build trust quickly, especially with difficult-to-reach students. Once trust is established there is a burden to do whatever is best for that student. Deadlines go better with a patient hand; discipline goes better with a sense of humor; details are better appreciated with a larger motivational goal. Failure is an underrated educator (or at least learning to overcome failure). We each benefit from someone walking with us while we learn on the journey. My education degree in journalism reflects my interest and expertise in a wide variety of subjects.
