In 1992 I graduated from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) with a degree in music education, vocal and trumpet emphasis. Since then, I have been employed by Defiance Area Youth for Christ, and it has been my privilege to assist young people to acheieve their fullest potential in every aspect of their lives. During my employment with YFC, I have been allowed to substitute teach in schools throughout Defiance County and have done so over the last ten years. I enjoy adapting my personal teaching style to each individual specifically. I am one who believes that children learn in different ways, and through different strategies, a teacher can help students find their best way to learn. Students who struggle with learning may just be not interested in what is being taught. I like to find out what the students are interested in and try to incorporate that into the subject area so they can be enthusiastic in the subject and be more wiling to learn. Learning can be fun and I want to make it my job to help make it possible.
I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University. Throughout my four years of attending, I have had a lot of experience teaching through my practicum classes and through student teaching. Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.
