A Little Bit About Me...

During my college career, I tutored for two years. I tutored first and second year undergraduates, consistently dealing with issues concerning reading comprehension, paper construction, grammar, and developmental thinking. I have also been teaching the last year (9th grade English) at a private school. My education (BA in English) successfully prepared me to teach the basics of English, i.e. grammar, sentence construction, identifying parts of speech, etc, as well as the less concrete ideas, such as theories, literary trends, intense analysis, and the like.

A Little Bit About Me...

From a love of nature, I pursued a career in the life sciences, majoring in Biology as an undergraduate and exploring the plant sciences in graduate school. An interest in the organization of chromosomes led to work with a small soil nematode. I studied gene expression, energy metabolism, and immune responses in a long-lived stage of this little worm. My teaching philosophy involves connecting with individual students. One of my strengths is identifying strong points in a student’s performance and teaching him to tap into successful facets of his/her performance. In English, I was trained in (and advocate) “Faulkner English” as developed by Claude Faulkner and taught at the University of Arkansas. This method employs a certain amount of deconstruction of sentences, beginning with the most simple, and can be geared to any level. In French, I do use some repetition, and, yes, memorizing conjugations, as a means of making material available to the student.
