To be a lifeguard, one must first learn to swim, then learn different techniques, then continue to refine those techniques to build up stamina and speed. The same is true of mathematics. First one learns number sense, then algebra skills, then a deeper understanding through practice, as well as new and more challenging problems. Taking a student from their current knowledge base to a much broader and deeper understanding is what I like most about teaching. Every student is different, so they often take different paths to gain a fuller comprehension.
