More About This Tutor...

I enjoy teaching and working with all children. I have been a Substitute teacher in Hampden County, MA and most recently worked as a Counselor for a group home in which the children needed support on a daily basis with their schoolwork. What I have gained from these experiences is that any child can succeed with patience and with the right resources. Striving to make a difference in a student's life is a goal of mine and I welcome the opportunity.
I have earned a Bachelors Degree in History which has enabled me to gain understanding in many areas of sociology and geography. In addition, I'm a native Portuguese speaker and am able to understand, speak and read, Spanish and French. During the last 3 years, I have tutored students in Portuguese, Spanish and French and assisted elementary students with their homework assignments.

As I carry out my personal philosophy of education, I seek to make learning lifelong and to encourage children to become contributing and active members of our society. To that end, it is my hope to make it possible for all children to gain understanding of material, to think critically about what they are learning, and to be able to apply their learning to everyday life and to their futures. I believe it is the role of the teacher to help students recognize their abilities and lead them towards life choices that use those abilities to the fullest. Often, we, as adults, have forgotten what we learned in school. This saddens me and motivates me to teach children skills and techniques that will benefit them now and in the future.
My interest in academia is rooted in my desire to help children learn and to make that learning lifelong. It is my goal to make learning fun, purposeful, ... read more

I really enjoy tutoring students one on one better than teaching in the classroom, because of the one on one contact, because I have found it helps take the pressure off the stuent to facilitate learning. Also, by taking a short time to learn myself about the person's background, it helps me to better understand how to best remove any obstacles that may be standing in the way. I am very patient, easy going, and I always try to empathize with my students when possible.
I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. In less then 1/2 hour, I was able to help him go from failing grades to straight A's. Later, I tutored fellow s ... read more

I am easy going, energetic, very passionate (especially when teaching calculus and physics), and engaging. In most cases it takes only a few sessions and students are having fun. I believe that most students can understand mathematics with a proper explanation. For example, the order of operations is usually presented to students without explanation for its existence. This gives the false sense that it is an arbitrary rule. I enjoy sharing my understanding to students, but I also enjoy providing a role model for my students. If I show compassion to a students it is almost always reciprocated. Academic excellence is a virtue but so is being a kind and caring person. I like to spread this through my teaching style.
I graduated from the UConn with a B.S. in physics and a minor in mathematics. Because I have used calculus and linear algebra on a daily basis as a means of solvin ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!" I feel that you are positive, smiling, and they believe that you believe in them, 9 out of 10 kids will follow you!
