I am a true constructivist. I believe that students need to construct their own understanding if they are to achieve mastery. When it comes to math, many kids can repeat the motions and get the right answer, but may not really understand what they are doing or why. I actually love the question, "When am I ever going to use this?" I know how math is applied to every day life, and without true understanding of the underlying concepts, students will not know when, where, or how to apply the operations they have learned. I give my students a strong basis of understanding before we move into the operations, so the knowledge is true, not rote.

When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. If I'm helping a student study hard on that big, important test that might have the ability to crush the student's soul - I bust out my acoustic guitar and sing about how It's The End of The World As We Know It (And This Test Means Very Little In The Long Run).
