Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University. The years at St. John's have given me the unusual ability to tutor students in Ancient Greek. They laid a foundation in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus which the years of Engineering built up further. At the high school and college level I am also currently able to tutor Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Psychology and Anthropology. My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. As a Graduate Teaching Fellow (GTF) in the Philosophy Department at the University of Oregon, I assist faculty by running two weekly 50-min discussion sections of approximately 30 students, and I am responsible for evaluating these sixty students' work for the class, particularly written work, and exams. This year I have acted as a GTF in the following courses: Phil 110 (Human Nature), Phil 102 (Ethics), and PHil 170 (Philosophy of Love and Sex). As a Writing Associate at Swarthmore College (2002-2005), I was hired and trained by Swarthmore College to tutor Swarthmore students in academic writing. I became a tutor at the request of a professor, and this work has led me to discover the joys of teaching. I love assisting students with reading and writing and helping them to find in themselves ability, confidence, and enthusiasm. I am passionate about working with students to find methods of studying that work for them, as well as helping their academic work by addressing other issues such as social pressures, learning disabilities, and lack of motivation. I am committed to giving my students a new-found sense of strength and self reliance, as well as being a mentor and friend.
